Sister and Friendship Cities
Thirteen Michigan cities have sister city agreements, which are formal documents signed by the mayor of both the Michigan and the Shiga city. Four Michigan cities have informal agreements with cities in Shiga, which are considered friendship cities. In all cases, the sister/friendship cities participate in various exchanges. Many have middle-school student exchanges; some have exchanges such as artwork done by students; and many citizens from the sister/friendship cities in both countries have traveled on the Goodwill Mission to their partner cities. On the Sister State Board there is a Sister City Liaison who helps keep these important relationships strong.
